A HIGH-FLYING former Hodgson student has been sharing her tips on getting a scholarship for a top university. Gemma Collins, who left Hodgson in 2012, is currently studying at the renowned Ivy League Harvard University in the United States. The 19-year-old was awarded a $240,000 scholarship is to get her university, accommodation and travel fees covered.
Gemma gave a talk at Blackpool Sixth Form College on a recent visit home. Hodgson students, interested in following her footsteps and applying to an American institution, were in the audience. Gemma encouraged students to consider the possibilities of studying abroad, as well as telling of the opportunities available to teens from low-income backgrounds, through education charity the Sutton Trust. The process of applying to Harvard is intense and Gemma had to put in many extra hours of work to prepare for the challenging selection tests.
Hodgson’s Head Girl Laura Jones said: “It’s really exciting to think that I could be in same shoes as Gemma and have the same fantastic opportunity in a few years’ time.”
