YEAR 11 student Natalya Stone has been crowned Fylde Young Musician of the Year. The 16-year-old competed against 24 students from all over the Fylde coast, singing two contrasting songs. Kirkham Grammar School played host to the first round of the Kirkham Rotary’s Young Musician of the Year Competition, with musicians entered from seven different schools.
Among the adjudicators were conductor Tom Newell and the accomplished musician Philip Dewhurst, who both praised the very high standards of the competition. Natalya, who won the vocal section, will now go forward to the next round – the rotary district finals in Darwen – on 1st February.
Mr Newell and Mr Dewhurst commented on the quality of Natalya’s voice and her exceptional ability to connect with the audience from the outset. Natalya, who also recently passed her Grade Six ABRSM Piano Exam with merit, said: “The competition was a bit daunting and, even though I absolutely love performing, it was a total surprise to win over so many talented musicians.
“I really appreciated the judges’ feedback and was delighted to be put forward to the next stage.”
The organiser of the competition, Rotarian Tim Leeson, added: “We all enjoyed the performances by such hard-working and accomplished musicians.”
