Double victory for Hodgson at county badminton contest

Boys Badminton (County Champions2)TEAMS from Hodgson Academy proved they could ‘smash it’ at the Lancashire Schools Badminton Finals.

The Boys’ and Girls’ Key Stage 3 teams – who were representing Wyre and Fylde – were both crowned Level 3 county champions following a gripping day of competition on Thursday 21st January.

The boys’ team (Isaac Foster, Billy Cartmell, Oliver Haddow, Luca Barrea and Jay Davies) had a convincing win in their final match of 5-0 against Lancaster Royal Grammar School.

The girls’ team (Laura Burnell, Elizabeth Andrew, Katie Jones, Molly Gordon and Emily McNeill) secured a 3-2 victory in their final against Westholme School in Blackburn.

Girls Badminton (County Champions2)PE teacher Paul Egan praised both teams for their victory. He said: “The students were all fantastic and worked really hard throughout the competition. The boys only dropped one game throughout the day. “Two of the girls only actually began playing competitively around 12 weeks ago, which makes their achievement even more impressive. Elizabeth Andrew, who hit the winning shot, is only a Year 7 student, so can be playing against students two years her senior.
“I have been going with teams from Hodgson to the county championships for several years now and this is the first time that I have known a school win from the Blackpool, Fylde or Wyre area.”

Both Hodgson teams will next represent Lancashire in the North West Schools Badminton Finals.
