Hot off the press, we've got Chess!!
18/07/2022

A fantastic afternoon of chess in the hall, thrashing through rounds 1 and 2 of the Summer Chess Tournament. All the names we've grown fond of over the year have come out to compete for the last title this academic year.

In the year 7 and 9 bracket we had a pleasant surprise as multi-tournament competitor Lucas 7S was first to finish his games in both rounds. Many of the games from this bracket were drawn out tactical affairs with participants looking at the clock and clinching the win on points. Milian 9A pulled out some exotic mating patterns and with two wins under his belt he is looking to power his way towards the semi-finals.

Here is the updated bracket for 7 and 9's:

The level of play in the 8 and 10's bracket was nothing short of superb. Round 1 saw a slew of attacking chess resulting in mates. Round 2 was a completely different story as competitors calculated and traded pieces to their advantage. The two time champion Theo 8W is making a strong case for his 3rd title of the year with two wins against strong players. Maisy 10A reaches the exact spot she got to last tournament with some excellent patient play. Will she be able to topple Theo 8W this time to get herself into the semi-final slot? Remmy 10S and Max 10A are both playing with confidence after mating in both games. Max 10A looked the part of grand master spending half his time walking around the room inbetween moves looking into other games.

Here is the updated bracket for 8 and 10's:

The chess now moves to lunch times in A03 for the rest of the week - all students are welcome to come and spectate.  Who will emerge victorious?
