ERIC – Everyone Reading in Class

For twenty minutes every week, when the bell rings, students stop the activities in their lessons to read a non-fiction article provided for them. The articles cover a wide range of topics in order to enrich the student’s learning experience in each of their academic subjects, and to enhance their cultural education when learning about issues in the world. Once the article has been read, students are given the opportunity to discuss the content of the article, or wider issues linked to what they have read.

A further aim of ERIC is to develop our student’s use of more sophisticated vocabulary. This will allow our students to communicate effectively in life beyond the Academy. Within each article, five words are highlighted. These words are identified as being key words that are vital in allowing students to express themselves coherently. The definitions of these words are provided on the article and students are encouraged to use these words whenever possible to show their understanding of language. We are committed to ensuring our students are provided with opportunities that will allow them to be successful, and having a broad and secure knowledge of vocabulary is one way we can support our students on their journey to success..
