The Role of the Local Governing Body (LGB)

The LGB operates to ensure that the Academy is led and managed effectively, in accordance with the powers delegated to it by the Trustees of The Coastal Collaborative Trust.

Specifically, the local governing body will:

  • Take delegated responsibility on behalf of the Trust Board for standards in their school/college. This includes ensuring robust policies and systems are in place for the safeguarding and wellbeing of all students.
  • Determine and review the effectiveness of the curriculum, ensuring systems are in place for securing excellent academic progress, high quality teaching, learning, and support and an impactful curriculum.
  • Know the strengths and areas for development for their Academy to improve and monitor the implementation of the improvement priorities.
  • Develop and maintain the culture, values and ethos of their Academy ensuring they are in line with the Trust vision, values, and strategic objectives.

  • Evaluate the Academy’s performance by:
    • reviewing the quality of education and support.
    • monitoring the overall effectiveness of leadership and management.
    • reviewing quality assurance reports.

  • Promote effective stakeholder engagement through:
    • partnership working between parents/carers and the Academy to promote high standards in attendance, learning and behaviour.
    • consultation with students, parents/carers, staff, and other stakeholders, e.g., employers, via regular surveys to assess performance and satisfaction against the Academy’s stated aims and objectives.
    • ensuring stakeholder feedback is utilised effectively to support the development of best practice and to promote the quality of the student experience.

  • Monitor and report to the Trust Board on all strategic aspects of safeguarding and SEND at the Academy through the appointment of appropriate link governors. Link governor reports should be shared with the LGB and the safeguarding and SEND Trustee/s.
  • Monitor the level and nature of complaints on a regular basis to ensure the effectiveness of this procedure and make recommendations to Academy practices where necessary.

Full details of responsibilities and delegation of powers are set out in the Scheme of Governance and Delegation. Should further clarification be required, governors should contact the Governance Professional (Clerk) in the first instance.
