National Champions U14s

Without dispute, the crowning ‘Hodgson Highlight’ of 2020 was the U14 girls’ football team winning the title of champions of England!

Hodgson took on Shenfield High School from Essex in the final on 16th October, at the historic Lilleshall National Sports Centre . During a thrilling game the team showed great fighting spirit, coming back after falling behind three times over the course of the game. The score stood at 4-4 at the conclusion of normal time, before Hodgson emerged victorious 5-4 in a nerve-wracking penalty shoot-out.

Due to Covid-19 related restrictions in place at Lilleshall, there was a marked contrast to the usual crowd-filled stadium atmosphere. Since spectators were not permitted to attend, the ESFA streamed the match live online via their YouTube channel, ESFA TV, with full commentary. You can still view the winning match here! Miss Sanderson, the team’s coach, along with Mr McCann, Mr Wharrier, and Mr Marsden all travelled down to Shropshire to support the team. This moral support was greatly appreciated by the team in such an unusual match setting.

This is the first time a Hodgson Academy girls’ team has competed in a final, and to end Shenfield’s 17-game winning streak was a huge honour and achievement.
